About The Maker
Peter Hemming
(b.1950)
I first took an interest in making silver jewellery a little over 20 years ago and was taught initially by Roger Barnes at Swarthmore in Leeds. I now find myself helping students with some technicalities of the craft at Night School, particularly when they see work or finishes they’d like to develop. Following retirement from employment (in Sustainable Transport and Highway Safety), and a number of successful collaborative exhibitions and sales, I have been encouraged to develop this interest and extend the range of those who see and wear my work and hold my first solo exhibition.
Though some work is precise and engineered my main source of inspiration is from the natural and built environment and often relates directly to drawings I make of skylines or natural objects when visiting different parts of the world. It is because of this that my work often takes an organic structure and finish. I take opportunities to experiment with different methods of creating textures and have found that this has given individuality to my work. I see most of what I make as being classic timeless pieces.
The scale of my work varies significantly as I am aware that people’s tastes are different. This allows me to enjoy the extravagance of working sometimes on large pieces and at other times on more precise and delicate, smaller items, which in turn helps to develop design and product finish.
Ultimately, I make pieces for specific occasions, or of course on request, that I would like to see others wearing and am greatly encouraged when they do.
